Broadway Star of the Future Play - New This Year

Updated Adjudication Rubric

An updated adjudication rubric has been created. You may find a copy of the new rubric in the handbook.

Production Requirement

The use of sweetened, click-tracks or non-scripted lip synching is not permitted. If the director believes certain moments require the use of sweetened vocal tracks, these should be clearly outlined and explained in the pre-performance email correspondence. Failure to notify the Broadway Star of the Future Awards of track sweetening or lip synching utilized within a production will result in the production’s disqualification from all award categories without refund of adjudication fees.

School Location

Qualifying high school programs must be located in Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco or Manatee counties.
For programs outside of the four-county area exceptions are possible but require further approval and resources. Programs are required to provide lodging for the reviewers attending the production upon request. Applications for productions outside the designated 4-county area must be submitted by October 31st.

Publicity

The Patel Conservatory purchases program advertisements in participating school printed theatrical programs each year. Please contact Straz Senior Marketing Manager – Arts Education, Stephanie Pemberton at stephanie.pemberton@strazcenter.org directly for more information.

History

The Straz Center’s Broadway Star of the Future Program has been in existence since 2009 and until 2016 was awarded in conjunction with the Mainstage committee of the Florida State Thespians. In 2015, The Broadway League invited all member professional theatres to select representatives utilizing an adjudication model. This opened the door in the 2016-17 school year for the Straz Center to provide an updated program recognizing regional high school productions and hosting its own regional awards ceremony. The first annual Broadway Star of the Future Awards Showcase was held on Sunday, June 4, 2017.

The National High School Musical Theater Awards

The Broadway Star of the Future Awards program is the Tampa Bay area’s regional awards program affiliated with the National High School Musical Theater Awards (NHSMTA) or the Jimmy™ Awards, named in honor of James M. Nederlander, legendary Broadway theatre owner and producer. The Jimmy™ Award for Best Performance by an Actress and Best Performance by an Actor is awarded annually to two grand prize winners selected from a group of student performers representing participating professional theatres. For more information on the Jimmy Awards, visit: www.nhsmta.com.

Eligibility

Reaching 4 counties within the region, local public, private high schools and/or collaborative multi-school or school district productions may apply to receive adjudication and participate in the Broadway Star of the Future Awards Showcase which features performances by Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Musical nominees. Tampa Bay area theater professionals, college faculty and industry experts serve as reviewers for productions from participating high schools. The high school theater educator receives valuable feedback on their performance and category awards are tabulated based on reviewer ratings.

Purpose

The Straz Center’s Broadway Star of the Future Awards (BSF) program is the Tampa Bay area’s celebration of outstanding student achievement in high school musical theater. The program focuses much-needed attention on the meaningful work being done on and off the stage by dedicated teachers and students within their high school theater programs. By recognizing and honoring individual artistry in vocal, dance, and acting performance, and honoring theater educators’ and administrators’ commitment to performing arts education, the Broadway Star of the Future Awards seek to encourage excellence in the performing arts, engage families in the activities of their students, ignite a far-reaching partnership between the Straz Center and area schools, and contributes to the development of future audiences for live performing arts in the Tampa Bay area.
